Chevron Agrees to Pay a $1M Civil Penalty for Violations of the Clean Air Act’s Renewable Fuel Standard

Chevron U.S.A. Inc. has agreed to a civil penalty of just over $1 million following violations of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) under the Clean Air Act. The company admitted it improperly generated more than 2.2 million advanced biofuel credits, known as Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs), by reusing credits on renewable diesel that had already been accounted for and sold. This misconduct occurred between January and August 2022, undermining the RFS program’s goal of encouraging real production of renewable fuels.
