Exhibition of rare 'Birds of America' volumes opens in Glasgow
An exhibition featuring two volumes of John James Audubon's 'Birds of America' has opened to the public in Glasgow.The volumes are on display at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG), which has owned them since 1838.The two first-edition volumes are part of a rare collection, with only about 120 complete sets known to exist worldwide.The book is valued at millions of pounds, with a similar copy recently insured for £7.5 million.The volumes contain life-size, hand-coloured illustrations of over 200 North American bird species from the early 19th century.Due to their large size and fragility, only one...
