Syrian general Bassam al-Hassan said to be protected in Lebanon amid US-linked arrangement
A former Syrian general wanted for crimes against humanity is being bankrolled and protected in Lebanon under an arrangement involving US and Lebanese authorities, according to a BBC investigation. Bassam al-Hassan, who oversaw Syria's chemical weapons programme and served as a senior adviser to former President Bashar al-Assad, is reported to be staying in Beirut after the collapse of the Assad regime in 2024.
