UK condemns Portsmouth anti-migrant protest blocking asylum seeker transport
The UK government has condemned a protest in Portsmouth after hundreds of demonstrators blocked roads and said they wanted to stop asylum seekers leaving the southern English city. The demonstration took place on Sunday night and followed a separate anti-migrant protest at the Port of Dover over the weekend. Police officers wearing riot shields were seen forming a cordon around buses carrying the asylum seekers.A spokesperson for the Home Office described the behaviour as "intimidating and thuggish" and said the right to peaceful protest must not cross into disorder.
