Magnitude 7.1 earthquake off Kyushu triggers tsunami warning as alerts spread across southern Japan
A preliminary magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off Japan's southern main island of Kyushu on Tuesday, prompting a tsunami warning and emergency earthquake alerts across several prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake's epicentre was about 10 kilometres beneath the seabed, and the tremor was felt in Kumamoto Prefecture. Officials warned that waves of up to 1 metre could reach coastal areas along the Ariake Sea and the Yatsushiro Sea.The warning covered Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures, all on Kyushu.
