Sudan Medical Workers Struggle Amid South Kordofan Violence and Supply Shortages

Sudan’s ongoing conflict in South Kordofan has triggered a humanitarian crisis, straining medical resources in the neighboring North Kordofan state. Tens of thousands displaced by violence require urgent medical attention, yet hospitals like El-Obeid Maternity Hospital are severely under-equipped. Doctors face shortages of vital surgical and delivery supplies, including antibiotics, sutures, and gloves, hampering their ability to save lives.
These shortages have had deadly consequences. Dr. Hasan Babikir recounted how he watched two premature triplets die due to a lack of intensive care beds. The collapse of healthcare infrastructure amid widespread displacement exacerbates suffering and increases mortality risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as mothers and newborns.
The situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and medical supply deliveries to stabilize healthcare services. Without intervention, continued violence and resource scarcity will worsen the public health emergency, with long-term impacts on Sudan’s already fragile medical system.
This crisis highlights how conflict-driven displacement not only creates immediate security concerns but also disrupts essential services, deepening the region’s humanitarian challenges.
