UN Expands Operations in Khartoum Amid Sudan Conflict and Rising Humanitarian Needs

The United Nations has significantly scaled up its operations in Khartoum, Sudan, responding to a sharp rise in humanitarian needs caused by nearly three years of conflict between rival military factions. UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Denise Brown has returned to the city, leading efforts to deliver life-saving assistance.
More than 1.6 million people have recently moved back to Khartoum, despite ongoing threats from war-damaged infrastructure and explosive remnants. The growing population intensifies demands on already strained resources and aid services.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized the urgent need for increased funding, noting that the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan is only 16% funded so far. Without sufficient international support, critical aid delivery will be compromised, worsening the suffering of millions.
This escalation highlights the precarious security and humanitarian situation in Sudan's capital, underscoring the urgent need for global attention and resources as the conflict continues to disrupt civilians’ lives and access to essential services.
