UK Advises Against Travel to Ecuador Amid Renewed State of Emergency and Violence

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated travel advice warning British nationals against all but essential travel to Ecuador's coastal region and areas within 20 kilometers of the Ecuador-Colombia border. This advisory follows the Ecuadorian government's renewal on April 2, 2026, of a 60-day state of emergency due to ongoing internal disturbances and armed violence. The affected coastal provinces and border zones have seen heightened security risks, including armed clashes.

The state of emergency means that travelers should anticipate increased police and military operations nationwide, often without advance notice. These security measures aim to curb violence but may cause significant travel disruptions and affect normal public services. Travelers are urged to follow all instructions from local authorities to ensure personal safety.

The advisory also warns that some travel insurance policies may be voided if individuals travel contrary to official government advice, potentially leaving travelers financially vulnerable. British citizens transiting airside through Guayaquil Airport in Guayas province are exempted from this restriction. The situation reflects heightened instability in Ecuador, impacting both residents and foreign visitors.

This development underscores ongoing security challenges in Ecuador that could affect regional stability and international travel. British nationals should closely monitor updates and reconsider travel plans given the volatile security environment.
