Knife homicides down 27% after removal of 63,000 knives and weapons

Since the current government took office, over 63,000 knives and weapons have been removed from the streets through multiple initiatives. These include successful surrender schemes, bans on zombie-style knives, machetes, and ninja swords, which alone yielded 57,726 surrendered weapons. Border Force has intercepted 4,656 knives at UK borders, and the police, through the County Lines Programme, have confiscated an additional 1,229. During this period, knife-related homicides have decreased by 27%. Knife-point robberies have declined by 10%, and hospital admissions due to stab wounds have fallen by 11%. These statistics reflect operational progress in reducing knife crime and associated violence. In response to the ongoing threat, the government launched the β€œProtecting Lives, Building Hope” plan, which seeks to halve knife crime within ten years. The strategy focuses on prevention by supporting at-risk youth, enforcing stricter controls on knife possession and sales, and intensifying policing efforts to apprehend offenders. Significant legislative measures include Ronan’s Law, introduced in the Crime and Policing Bill, requiring mandatory two-stage age verification at online purchase and delivery points for knives. It also imposes mandatory reporting of bulk knife purchases to law enforcement. These measures respond to concerns following the fatal stabbing of Ronan Kanda with a ninja sword bought online. Further provisions in the Crime and Policing Bill establish a distinct offense for possession of a knife with intent to commit unlawful violence, applicable even in private spaces. Police will be granted new powers to seize knives intended for unlawful violence, enhancing enforcement capabilities. These combined efforts demonstrate a coordinated approach to removing knives from circulation, preventing access to dangerous weapons, and targeting offenders. The government frames these steps as critical to saving lives, protecting communities, and disrupting the cycle of knife crime.
