Italy’s Meloni and Pakistan’s Sharif Discuss Ceasefire and Regional Security Cooperation

On the evening prior to scheduled negotiations in Islamabad, Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke by telephone with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Meloni conveyed strong appreciation for Sharif and the Pakistani government's role in securing a ceasefire agreement involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Both leaders exchanged views on prospects for a comprehensive conflict resolution. They agreed to maintain close contact regarding ongoing diplomatic developments. A key focus of the discussion was the importance of achieving an agreement that ensures Iran’s nuclear program remains exclusively civilian in nature. Both leaders also emphasized the need for a sustainable reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for regional maritime security. Additionally, the conversation underscored the necessity of establishing a broader regional security framework to stabilize tensions. This call for security cooperation precedes upcoming negotiations in Islamabad scheduled to begin the day after their call. The dialogue reflects Italy’s support for the Pakistani-led diplomatic effort to resolve the conflict and stabilize the region.
