IAEA Confirms Ongoing Negotiations for Zaporizhzhya Power Line Repairs Amid Ukraine Conflict

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi announced that negotiations are ongoing to establish another ceasefire to allow for the repair of the main 750 kV Dniprovska off-site power line at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine. This power line has been disconnected since 24 March 2026 due to damage. Currently, the ZNPP remains connected to external power through its only backup line, the 330 kV Ferosplavna-1 power line. This backup line was restored on 5 March following repairs conducted under a locally negotiated fifth ceasefire, facilitated by the IAEA. The damage to the Dniprovska line is located along the Dnieper River, which marks the frontline in the region where the plant is situated. Despite the challenging conditions and the frontline location, both conflicting sides have engaged constructively in talks mediated by the IAEA to enable repair operations to commence soon. In parallel with efforts to restore power infrastructure, the IAEA continues to provide vital equipment and technical assistance across Ukraine under its comprehensive assistance programmes. This includes deliveries of medical supplies such as ventilation devices, sterilizer equipment, ECG machines, and diagnostic tools to hospitals and research centers, including the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine in Kyiv and the South Ukraine Hospital. Additional equipment deliveries include leptospira strains for disease diagnosis in the Poltava Region, mercury analyzers to the Kherson Regional Center, and a low-level liquid scintillation counter to the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant. These shipments have been funded by contributions from Denmark, Germany, Italy, and Japan. The IAEA has maintained its support and safety enhancement mission in Ukraine since 2022, with Director General Grossi emphasizing ongoing commitment to nuclear safety and health support amid conflict conditions.
