Iran Threatens Retaliation Against Persian Gulf and Oman Sea Ports Amid U.S. Naval Blockade Threat

The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran have threatened retaliatory measures targeting ports in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman should the security of Iranian ports in these regions become threatened. This warning was issued by the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters and was published by state media on Monday the 13th. Iran's military statement emphasized that the security of ports in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman must be guaranteed collectively, warning that if Iranian port security is jeopardized, no ports in these waters would remain safe. The declaration labeled the U.S. naval blockade plan as illegal and equated it to an act of piracy. These developments coincide with U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement following unsuccessful peace negotiations in Islamabad. Trump declared a naval blockade targeting all vessels entering or exiting Iranian ports specifically in the Gulf and Sea of Oman. Central Command indicated the blockade would be enforced impartially against vessels from all nations using Iranian ports but would allow passage for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz to non-Iranian ports. The announcement has had immediate economic repercussions, with Brent crude oil prices rising above $100 a barrel, an increase of approximately 6.5%. The Strait of Hormuz is strategically critical, with around 20 million barrels of oil per day historically passing through it, accounting for about 20% of the global oil and gas supply. In its statement, Iran underscored that vessels linked to enemy forces are banned from transiting the Strait of Hormuz, signaling the enforcement of a permanent control mechanism by Iranian Armed Forces. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy further affirmed continued vigilance over the Strait, warning that any unauthorized or hostile actions will be met with lethal force. These actions mark a significant escalation in tensions in the Persian Gulf region, highlighting ongoing disputes over control of strategic maritime passages and the security of energy exports.
