Iran Threatens to Close Strait of Hormuz if US Naval Blockade Persists

The Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that Iran may close the Strait of Hormuz if the United States continues its naval blockade. This strait is critical as it facilitates the transit of about 20% of the world's oil production.

Tehran views the US naval presence as a violation of a ceasefire agreement and a threat to Iranian export and import operations. US warships are currently deployed in the Indian Ocean near the Strait of Hormuz, positioned to intercept potential Iranian attacks.

US President Donald Trump stated on social media that the naval blockade against Iran will remain fully active until negotiations are "100% concluded." Iran has conditioned the reopening of the strait on several terms: prohibition of military and cargo ship passage from hostile nations, exclusive transit along routes designated by Iran, and coordination with the IRGC. Additionally, the ceasefire in Israeli-Lebanese hostilities, brokered partly by Trump following Iranian demands, was key to reopening discussions.

Despite the US blockade announcement, there are reports challenging its effectiveness; three Iranian oil tankers carrying 5 million barrels of crude oil reportedly navigated the Gulf through the Strait amidst the blockade, per ship tracking firm Kpler. The US announced the blockade after failed peace talks in Pakistan.

This situation presents sustained regional maritime tension with impacts on international energy supply security.
