The Government of Italy, through a statement by President Meloni, has announced the unanimous Senate approval of legislation creating a national day in memory of journalists killed due to their profession. This official recognition is scheduled for May 3 each year.
The national day will commemorate journalists who lost their lives upholding the public's right to receive information. The tribute includes prominent Italian journalists such as Cosimo Cristina, Mauro De Mauro, Giovanni Spampinato, Peppino Impastato, and others listed by President Meloni.
The Government emphasized the importance of remembering these men and women who showed passion and professionalism in their work. The initiative reflects Italy's commitment to honoring journalists' sacrifices in the face of threats encountered domestically and internationally.
This legislative milestone follows years of advocacy and aims to institutionalize respect and remembrance for journalists who risked and lost their lives to report the truth. The first national remembrance day is to take place on May 3, establishing an annual observance within the Italian Republic.
