Modi speaks to Kuwait emir after airport attack and West Asia escalation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken by phone with Kuwait's emir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al Sabah, as tensions in West Asia continue to rise. The call came after an Iranian attack on Kuwait International Airport that reportedly killed an Indian national and injured more than 60 people. India said the leaders discussed the evolving security situation and the need for de-escalation.

According to an official statement, Modi expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and reiterated India's condemnation of attacks on Kuwait's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement said the two leaders exchanged views on the regional security situation. Modi also repeated the call for dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace and stability at the earliest opportunity.
The phone call followed weekend exchanges of fire between Israel and Iran, which were described as the first significant escalation since a fragile ceasefire was agreed in April. India said last week that civilian population and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted. It also urged all parties to stop such attacks after the strike on Kuwait airport.
The incident has added a diplomatic dimension to an already volatile regional confrontation. Kuwait is home to a large Indian community, and the Indian leader thanked the emir for his personal attention to their safety and well-being. India's embassy in Kuwait said it was coordinating with Kuwaiti authorities to support the bereaved family and those injured in the airport attack.

The airport strike has also sharpened concern about the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure in the wider conflict. The reported death of an Indian national has made the issue more immediate for New Delhi, which has repeatedly called for restraint in the region. The call with Kuwait's ruler also underlines the importance India places on protecting its citizens abroad during periods of instability.
This was the first phone conversation between Modi and the emir since the war in West Asia broke out on February 28. Earlier in March, Modi had spoken separately with Kuwait's crown prince about regional stability. What remains unclear is the full scale of the airport attack, including the circumstances of the strike and the condition of those injured.
Further official updates are likely to focus on casualty figures, diplomatic responses and any additional security measures around Indian nationals in Kuwait.
