European Commission Vows Firm Response to Any New US Tariffs

The European Commission in Brussels has rejected US President Donald Trump's warning that tariffs of up to 100 percent could be imposed on exports from European countries that introduce new digital taxes on US technology companies. The Commission said the European Union and its member states retain the sovereign right to regulate economic activity within their territories in line with democratic values and international obligations.

A Commission spokesperson said any unilateral measures targeting those policies would be unjustified. The EU, the spokesperson added, would respond swiftly and decisively to defend its rights and regulatory autonomy if Washington carried out the tariff threat.

The Commission said European taxes apply equally to all major companies without discrimination. It also reaffirmed support for a coordinated international approach to taxing the digital economy, consistent with the agreement reached by the Group of Seven.

The source does not report that tariffs have been imposed. It records a direct policy clash between the European Commission and the Trump administration over possible trade retaliation linked to digital taxation.
