EU backs Israel-Lebanon framework agreement calling for Hezbollah disarmament
The European Union has welcomed a framework agreement signed by Lebanon and Israel in Washington that calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah and for the IDF to progressively redeploy out of Lebanese territory. The EU said the agreement offers a needed perspective for de-escalation and peace, and for restoring Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In its statement, the EU commended the constructive engagement of Israel and Lebanon and urged all actors to adhere to the agreement and implement their commitments. It said this should be done through the newly established trilateral Military Coordination Group.
The EU also called for a permanent end to hostilities and full respect for international law, including international humanitarian law. The statement said this includes protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The EU said any lasting solution must be anchored in implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. It also referred to a recently approved 100-million-euro assistance package for the Lebanese Armed Forces, saying it supports efforts by the Lebanese government to assert state authority, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its monopoly over arms.

The EU said it stands ready to support implementation of the framework agreement and further enhance support for the LAF and internal security forces, including through a possible EU mission, and recalled the importance of a continued UN presence in Lebanon in a post-UNIFIL context in 2027.
