The office described the Southern District of California as the fourth-busiest federal district, saying the workload is largely driven by a high volume of border-related crimes. The district covers San Diego and Imperial counties.

The district shares a 140-mile border with Mexico. The filing area includes the San Ysidro Port of Entry, which the source described as the world's busiest land border crossing, linking San Diego and Tijuana.
