Costa opens first Partners for Multilateralism meeting with six co-hosts

President António Costa opened the first meeting of Partners for Multilateralism, saying he was pleased to co-host the initiative with Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, India and Kenya. He described the gathering as a wide and diverse representation of the international community, bringing together partners from different regions, cultures and histories.

Costa said the world is at a critical moment, with conflict spreading and international law, including the United Nations Charter, being repeatedly violated. He said this includes violations by permanent members of the UN Security Council.

He also said the multilateral system is under stress while climate change, pandemics, artificial intelligence and economic insecurity are affecting all countries, regardless of size. Costa said the initiative is being launched as an open platform for partners from all parts of the world who are ready to defend common principles and work toward concrete solutions.

He said it will function as a network for dialogue, coalition-building and practical cooperation, with the core objective of supporting the United Nations and other multilateral formats and turning shared commitments into concrete action.
