Spain's King and Queen to make state visit to Finland on 6, 7 October 2026

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain will pay a state visit to Finland on 6, 7 October 2026 at the invitation of President Alexander Stubb. The Office of the President of the Republic of Finland said the visit will focus on deepening bilateral relations between Finland and Spain, which are fellow members of the European Union and NATO.

The programme is set to cover cooperation in politics, trade and the economy, defence, culture and science. It will also emphasize Europe's comprehensive security and defence, Arctic and polar issues, Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, and multilateral cooperation.

In Helsinki, the presidential couple will receive the King and Queen at an official welcoming ceremony in front of the Presidential Palace on Tuesday 6 October. Members of the public may view the ceremony, as well as the greeting from the balcony of the Presidential Palace, from Market Square starting at 10.00.

Official talks between the two delegations will follow at the Presidential Palace, with Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares taking part. The visit will continue with a luncheon hosted by Mayor Daniel Sazonov at Helsinki City Hall.

King Felipe will then meet Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. In the afternoon, a business event at Finlandia Hall will bring together Finnish and Spanish companies working on artificial intelligence development, particularly in the semiconductor and quantum technology sector.

President Stubb and King Felipe will address the gathering. Mrs Innes-Stubb and Queen Letizia will separately visit Käpylä Comprehensive School, and the first day will end with a gala dinner at the Presidential Palace.

On 7 October, the King and Queen will lay wreaths at the Heroes' Cross and Marshall Mannerheim's grave in Hietaniemi Cemetery. They will later visit Finlandia Hall for the Visions of Alvar Aalto , Finlandia Exhibition and an exhibition of contemporary Spanish architecture, and hold a reception in honour of their Finnish hosts.

In Rovaniemi, President Stubb and King Felipe will learn about the Lapland Air Wing and the Jaeger Brigade, meet conscripts, visit the Arktikum Arctic Science Centre and Museum, and conclude the state visit at the University of Lapland with speeches on European security, global engagement and cooperation, and meetings with students.
