Meloni marks anniversary of 7 October Hamas attacks

President Giorgia Meloni issued a statement on the anniversary of the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks, saying the assaults massacred men, women and children, targeted young people gathered to listen to music, and dragged innocent people into captivity. She said the victims and their loved ones, along with people who endured the horror of being held hostage, and the Israeli people, are being remembered again today.

Meloni said the time that has passed does not diminish the gravity of the crimes and said no cause can justify the deliberate massacre of innocent people. She said remembering the attacks also means renewing commitment against all forms of anti-Semitism.

Meloni added that, in the name of protecting all civilians involved, Italy cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of the people of Gaza or to the escalating violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. She said the spiral of violence must be broken and that Italy will continue to work for peace guaranteeing security for Israelis and freedom and dignity for Palestinians, with two states living side by side within recognised borders.
