Abu Dhabi hosts SMIIC Metrology Council meeting on measurement cooperation

The Emirates Metrology Institute (EMI), part of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC), hosted the 18th meeting of the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) in Abu Dhabi on 5 and 6 October 2026. Delegations from Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries represented on the council attended the meeting, along with metrology experts and specialists.

The session was chaired by Engineer Saeed Al Muhairi, Chairman of the SMIIC Metrology Council and Executive Director of EMI. Representatives of the Gulf Association for Metrology (GULFMET), the Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS) and the SMIIC General Secretariat were also present.

The agenda covered cooperation on measurement capabilities, product quality and industrial competitiveness. Al Muhairi said accurate measurement supports trust in products and services, improves production efficiency and helps trade and innovation.

He said cooperation is needed to exchange knowledge and build capability in response to rapid industrial and technological change, and pointed to artificial intelligence as a tool to improve measurement systems and decision-making. Members reviewed the SMIIC Metrology Council Strategy 2026, 2028, heard national reports and sub-committee updates, and concluded by adopting resolutions and recommendations for future work.
