EU faces winter gas shortage risk as storage falls to lowest level since 2011
The European Union faces possible gas supply shortages during the 2026-2027 winter, with storage levels at their lowest for this time of year since records began in 2011. The warning comes in a report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, which cited high prices and disruptions to global supplies.

According to the report, the EU may need to cut winter gas demand by 7 percent, equal to 14 billion cubic metres, compared with last winter. Data cited in the report showed EU gas storage at about 72.4 percent on 3 October, down from around 83 percent a year earlier.
The report said further supply disruptions, combined with an unusually cold winter, could add pressure on gas prices and energy supplies. It said energy-intensive industries and consumers could be forced to reduce consumption as Europe's reliance on liquefied natural gas imports and volatility in global markets deepen concern over the bloc's energy security in the coming months.
