The participants reviewed progress made over recent months and discussed upcoming initiatives. The talks focused on preventing mass irregular arrivals, addressing the instrumentalisation of migrants, and implementing the new European regulatory framework.
Meloni specifically pointed to recent events in Ceuta and said the Union's external borders require a high level of vigilance. She stressed the need to prevent irregular immigration and the security risks linked to it, and also raised the need for a targeted revision of EU legislation to improve the effectiveness of new procedures for detaining irregular migrants during border processing.
