EU adopts EUR 20 million Nigeria defence assistance measure under European Peace Facility
The Council has adopted a EUR 20 million assistance measure under the European Peace Facility to support the armed forces of Nigeria. It is the first bilateral EPF measure for Nigeria, which already benefits from EPF support as part of the multinational joint task force in the Lake Chad basin.

The measure provides non-lethal defence capabilities for the Nigerian armed forces in the areas of counter-improvised explosive device, counter-unmanned aircraft system, night vision and individual protection. The Council said the package is a concrete step toward deepening the security partnership between the EU and Nigeria.
According to the Council, the support is designed to improve the security of troops deployed on Nigeria's national territory and strengthen their capacity to react against malign external actors, armed groups and bandits. The measure aligns with priorities discussed in the Peace, Security and Defence Dialogue between Nigeria and the EU, most recently held on 18 February 2026, and during the 8th Nigeria-EU ministerial dialogue held on 23 March 2026 in Abuja.
The Council said the EPF support forms part of a broader EU assistance package aimed at peace, stability and efforts to prevent and combat violent extremism.
