Qatar Affirms Commitment to Boosting Int'l Cooperation Against World Drug Problem

On March 11, Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening global efforts to combat the escalating drug crisis. At the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Ambassador Jassim Yaaqob Al Hamadi highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy combining prevention, treatment, law enforcement, and sustainable development.

The announcement follows the World Drug Report 2025 and a UNODC executive report, which both warn of the rapid expansion and evolving complexity of global drug markets. This growing problem affects health systems, security, and social stability worldwide, emphasizing the need for coordinated international action.

Qatar's stance reflects increasing global concerns about drug trafficking and abuse, which strain public health and law enforcement agencies. By advocating a holistic approach, Qatar aims to contribute to reducing the social and economic costs borne by affected communities internationally. Enhanced collaboration could improve resource-sharing and policy alignment among nations facing these challenges.

The reaffirmation also positions Qatar as a proactive player in addressing transnational security and health threats linked to drugs, which remain a critical issue on the United Nations agenda.
