UK Marks 30 Years of Dayton Article IV and Sub-Regional Arms Control: UK statement to the OSCE

The United Kingdom marked the 30th anniversary of the Sub-Regional Arms Control Agreement established under Article IV of the Dayton Peace Accords, which serves as a cornerstone of arms control and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Senior Military Advisor Lt Col Joby Rimmer highlighted the Agreement’s crucial role in preventing military escalation and fostering peace since the end of the Bosnian War.
The UK government reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Dayton Peace Agreement, credited for ending a brutal conflict that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the 1990s. Officials stressed the importance of updating the agreement to keep pace with contemporary security threats and regional dynamics.
This modernization effort is seen as vital to ensuring the effectiveness of arms control mechanisms amid evolving geopolitical tensions and increased military risks in the Western Balkans. Strengthening these agreements benefits not only Bosnia and Herzegovina but the broader European security landscape by reducing the chance of armed conflict resurgence.
The UK’s renewed commitment signals continued international engagement and assistance in maintaining peace in the region, underscoring the importance of diplomatic and military cooperation to uphold stability three decades after the original accords were signed.
