Drone Strikes Kill Over 200 Civilians in Sudan’s Kordofan and White Nile Regions

Since March 4, Sudan has endured devastating drone strikes in the Kordofan region and White Nile state, resulting in over 200 civilian deaths, according to UN human rights officials. These attacks, carried out by rival military factions engaged in brutal civil warfare, have disproportionately impacted the civilian population. At least 152 deaths were reported in West Kordofan alone.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, denounced the repeated use of explosive drones targeting populated areas, warning that such tactics cause widespread harm to civilians and violate international law. Despite multiple appeals to stop indiscriminate attacks, the violence continues unabated.

The attacks threaten to exacerbate Sudan’s humanitarian crisis by destroying critical infrastructure and displacing communities. Civilians caught in the conflict face increasing insecurity, with little protection against the growing use of advanced drone weaponry. The international community is urged to pressure all armed groups to respect legal prohibitions against targeting civilians.

This intensification of drone warfare represents a dangerous escalation in Sudan’s conflict, risking further civilian casualties and destabilization. The continuing hostilities hamper prospects for peace and prolong suffering across already vulnerable regions of the country.
