UN Expert Warns of Worsening Crisis in Myanmar Five Years After Coup

Myanmar remains trapped in a deepening crisis five years after the military’s seizure of power. Violence has escalated across the country, driving millions more civilians into hardship and displacement. Humanitarian needs are growing rapidly, affecting approximately 100,000 people as armed conflict continues to disrupt daily life and restrict access to aid.

Tom Andrews, the United Nations’ independent human rights expert in Myanmar, presented his final report to the UN Human Rights Council, urging the international community not to relent in holding Myanmar’s military junta accountable. He emphasized that the deteriorating geopolitical environment is hindering efforts to improve human rights and protect vulnerable populations.

The junta’s continued repression and military offensives have intensified suffering for ordinary Myanmar citizens, with reports of widespread abuses and destabilization. Andrews warned that without renewed global resolve, civilians risk being abandoned amid escalating violence and worsening humanitarian conditions.

The situation’s complexity and the international community’s limited leverage pose ongoing challenges. The UN expert’s call to action stresses the urgency of coordinated international pressure and aid to mitigate the crisis and uphold human rights standards in Myanmar.
