Lebanese Military Chief and UN Secretary-General Stress Stability Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Rodolphe Haykal met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Beirut to address the rising military tensions in southern Lebanon. With Israeli airstrikes intensifying amid the US-Israeli conflict against Iran, the meeting underscored the importance of implementing UN Resolution 1701, aimed at preserving ceasefire and stabilizing the region.

The discussions recognized the indispensable role of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon, emphasizing the need for close coordination between the Lebanese military and UN peacekeepers. This collaboration is critical as Israeli raids have increased the risk of wider conflict and have already caused substantial casualties, including 26 paramedic deaths and over 50 injuries since early March.

The evolving situation directly affects Lebanon’s civilian population and frontline responders, heightening fears of an expanding military confrontation that risks drawing in regional actors. The Lebanese military’s call for adhering to international agreements reflects efforts to curtail further violence and preserve fragile peace amid growing hostility.

Ensuring the enforcement of existing ceasefire agreements is vital to prevent the destabilization of Lebanon and the broader Middle East. The meeting highlighted the urgent need for sustained international engagement to manage escalating tensions and avert a wider military conflict that could have severe humanitarian consequences.
