UK and Nigeria agree to speed removal of illegal Nigerian migrants

The UK government has reached a new immigration enforcement deal with Nigeria to facilitate quicker removals of Nigerian nationals without legal status. Previously, the UK relied on emergency travel documents from Nigeria, which caused delays. Under the agreement, Nigeria will recognise UK-issued letters—an alternative form of ID used when passports are unavailable—making deportations more efficient.

This change primarily impacts Nigerian visa overstayers, rejected asylum claimants, and foreign criminals residing illegally in the UK. By removing a key administrative barrier, the UK Home Office aims to expedite removals and reduce the population of unauthorized migrants.

The deal was signed by UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Nigeria’s Interior Minister Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo during Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's state visit to the UK, highlighting high-level cooperation on immigration issues. The new arrangement strengthens the UK's broader efforts to tighten immigration controls and enforce deportation policies.

Critics may raise concerns about the human rights and humanitarian impact on individuals facing removal, but the UK government stresses the necessity of upholding immigration laws and protecting public safety. The agreement signals a more streamlined, bilateral approach to immigration enforcement between the two countries.
