Qatar Joins International Task Force to Remove Syria’s Remaining Chemical Weapons

Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, took part in the launch of the “Breath of Freedom Task Force” at the UN headquarters in New York. This new international coalition is tasked with removing the remaining elements of Syria’s chemical weapons program, which pose ongoing security risks.
The task force is led by Syria and includes major countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, France, and Turkey, highlighting broad international cooperation on chemical weapons disarmament. Qatar’s participation signals its commitment to global security and regional stability amid continued volatility in Syria.
Removing these chemical weapons remnants is critical to preventing their use in future conflicts and curbing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The move aims to support peace efforts and protect civilians in Syria and neighboring countries from chemical attacks.
This development underscores lasting international concerns about Syria’s chemical weapons and the global community’s insistence on enforcing international arms control agreements to reduce conflict risks in a fragile region.
