UK Upgrades Radar Systems to Unlock 10 GW Offshore Wind Capacity

The UK government announced a major upgrade to its air defence radar systems aimed at resolving interference issues caused by offshore wind farms. Specially designed radars will replace older systems prone to anomalies, allowing the safe coexistence of air defence operations with renewable energy infrastructure. This technological advancement is expected to unlock up to 10 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity in UK waters, enough to power thousands of homes with clean, domestically produced electricity.

This move supports the UK’s clean energy ambitions by removing a significant hurdle in offshore wind development, which has been constrained due to radar interference concerns. The upgrade will enable rapid expansion in wind energy projects critical to meeting climate goals and securing energy supply.

Affected stakeholders include the renewable energy industry, homeowners benefiting from cleaner power, and national security agencies relying on effective radar monitoring. By ensuring no compromise to air defence capabilities, the government balances energy innovation with security needs.

Additionally, the government has launched a consultation to explore unlocking 6 gigawatts of onshore wind capacity near Scotland’s Eskdalemuir seismic array. These coordinated initiatives underline the UK's commitment to expanding renewable energy while safeguarding essential defence infrastructure.
