Canada’s Auditor General Flags Flaws in RCMP Recruitment Process

The Auditor General of Canada conducted a detailed review of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's hiring procedures covering 2023 through September 2025, uncovering issues in attracting and processing new recruits efficiently. These challenges threaten the RCMP’s ability to maintain adequate staffing levels amidst evolving security demands.
In response, the Public Safety Minister announced full acceptance of the Auditor General’s recommendations. The RCMP plans to overhaul its recruitment system based on this report to ensure it can recruit and deploy personnel effectively, which is critical for maintaining national law enforcement capabilities.
This modernization effort comes at a time when law enforcement agencies are under increasing pressure to address complex security threats. Delays or inefficiencies in recruitment could impair the RCMP’s operational readiness and public safety responsibilities across Canada.
The report underscores the importance of adapting recruitment strategies to current challenges in order to sustain the RCMP’s role as the country’s primary federal policing body.
