Auditor General Flags RCMP Recruitment Delays Amid Capacity Challenges

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is facing critical bottlenecks in recruiting new officers, according to a report released by the Office of the Auditor General. The report identifies slow applicant processing, poor workforce planning, and misaligned recruitment targets as key issues undermining the RCMP’s ability to meet operational demands.
These challenges pose risks to public safety across Canada by potentially reducing policing capacity at a time when crime prevention and law enforcement support are vital. The RCMP has officially accepted all report recommendations and acknowledged recruitment as a strategic priority.
Over the coming years, under its 2024–2027 Strategic Plan, the RCMP aims to overhaul recruitment and training systems to ensure faster processing and better resource alignment. This effort is essential for sustaining effective policing services nationwide and supporting allied agencies.
Improved recruitment is expected to help the RCMP address increasing operational pressures, maintain community safety, and restore confidence in its workforce readiness amid evolving security needs.
