UN: Over 500 Civilians Killed by Drone Strikes in Sudan Since January

Since January 2024, over 500 civilians in Sudan have died due to drone strikes, according to a United Nations report. Most casualties were reported in the strategic Kordofan region, where the conflict remains intense. The scale and frequency of airstrikes using advanced drone technology have increased sharply, especially in the first half of March when more than 277 civilians were killed.

The spike in drone attacks highlights a shift in the conflict’s dynamics, introducing relatively low-cost yet highly destructive weaponry into civilian areas. This escalation poses a severe threat to the safety of non-combatants and critical infrastructure.

The humanitarian impact is worsening as repeated strikes impede access to essential services and exacerbate displacement and suffering among Sudanese communities. The UN spokesperson emphasized concerns that continued drone strikes could deepen instability in the region.

This intensification underscores the urgent need for international attention and efforts to protect civilians and curb the lethal use of drones in conflict zones.
