France and São Tomé and Príncipe Boost Maritime Security and Bilateral Cooperation

France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot and São Tomé and Príncipe’s Foreign Minister Ilza Amado Vaz held a telephone meeting on March 24 to enhance bilateral ties. Their discussion centered on shared commitments to international law, multilateralism, and cooperation within the Francophonie community. Key focus areas included energy collaboration and educational initiatives.

A significant portion of the talks addressed the urgent need to deepen maritime security cooperation in the Gulf of Guinea. This follows France and Gabon’s planned joint presidency of the G7++ Friends of the Gulf of Guinea in 2026, which prioritizes maritime security challenges like piracy, illegal fishing, and trafficking.

Strengthening maritime collaboration is vital for São Tomé and Príncipe, given its strategic location in the Gulf of Guinea, a hotspot for maritime crime impacting regional stability and international shipping routes. Enhanced cooperation with France aims to bolster surveillance, joint operations, and capacity building in maritime law enforcement.

This engagement underscores France's commitment to regional stability in West Africa and its strategic interest in securing critical sea lanes, which are crucial for global trade and energy supplies. The partnership is expected to yield tangible security improvements and foster sustainable development in maritime and educational sectors.
