UK Travelers Face New EU Digital Border Checks This Easter

As Easter approaches, UK travelers to Europe must prepare for new digital border controls introduced by the European Union. The EU rolled out its Entry/Exit System (EES) starting October last year, replacing traditional passport stamps with a digital system that logs arrivals and departures of non-EU visitors.

This system covers 29 countries, including all EU members except Ireland and Cyprus, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. UK nationals travelling for short stays—up to 90 days within a 180-day period—will have their data recorded to strengthen border security and help detect overstayers.

The implementation of the EES means additional time at border checks is likely, posing potential delays during busy travel periods like Easter. UK travelers and travel operators have been advised to plan accordingly and follow guidance to avoid disruptions.

This change marks a significant shift in EU border management for UK visitors post-Brexit, emphasizing more rigorous entry controls and digital monitoring. It also signals increased scrutiny on short-term visitors to the Schengen zone, impacting how British tourists and business travelers approach EU trips.
