Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Plant Runs on Backup Power Amid Damage to Main Supply Line

Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, was cut off from its primary off-site power line on Tuesday after damage was reported to the 750 kV Dniprovska power line. The plant now depends on a single backup power connection, raising safety concerns amid ongoing conflict in the region.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is coordinating closely with both the Ukrainian grid operator and Russian authorities to plan urgent repairs necessary to restore the main power supply and prevent any risk of power loss affecting the plant’s safety systems. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi is pushing for a localized ceasefire to allow repair crews to work without threat from hostilities.
This power disruption threatens to exacerbate risks at a facility already vulnerable due to the military conflict near the site. Ensuring stable power is critical to maintain cooling systems and prevent nuclear hazards, affecting not only Ukraine but the wider region.
The IAEA's involvement highlights the international concern over nuclear safety amid armed conflict, and the outcome of ceasefire talks will be crucial for stabilizing the situation in the coming days.
