Somali Army, Ugandan Forces Kill Over 40 Al-Shabaab Militants in Lower Shabelle

Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF), backed by Ugandan AUSSOM troops, successfully repelled an Al-Shabaab attack in the strategic Lower Shabelle region on August 1, 2019. More than 40 militants were killed and others wounded during the operation aimed at securing Mubarak, a key locality recently liberated from extremist control. This victory disrupts Al-Shabaab’s presence and curtails their ability to stage attacks in the area.

The offensive is part of a sustained security campaign launched during Ramadan to reclaim critical territories and infrastructure from insurgent groups. Restoring access to blocked roads is critical to improving movement and economic activity for local civilians. Authorities emphasize their commitment to eliminate terrorist threats and ensure civilian safety across Somalia.

Al-Shabaab’s significant losses in manpower could weaken their operational capabilities, but the group remains a persistent threat. The Somali government’s continued military pressure aims to dismantle militant networks and stabilize the Lower Shabelle region, which is vital for national security and regional stability.

This operation highlights ongoing international cooperation, with Ugandan forces supporting Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts, reinforcing regional security partnerships against extremist insurgencies.
