Somali Army Reopens Key Mogadishu-Baidoa Road After Clearing Al-Shabaab Militants

The Somali National Army (SNA) has officially reopened the strategic road linking the capital Mogadishu to Baidoa after several days of military operations targeting Al-Shabaab militants. The clearance of armed groups along this vital corridor marks a critical achievement in efforts to reestablish government control and improve security in the region.
The road had been heavily contested by militant elements, disrupting supply chains and movement between the capital and the southwestern territories. Its reopening restores a crucial supply and transport route that benefits both military logistics and civilian travel.
Following the reopening, security forces have launched additional stabilization operations within Baidoa to prevent any militant regrouping or resurgence. These efforts involve removing militia groups previously aligned with former regional leadership, improving local governance and security.
Residents of Baidoa, along with federal and regional officials, welcomed the Somali troops, underscoring the population’s desire for lasting peace and state presence. This development strengthens the government’s ability to project authority and stabilize the Southwest State after long periods of insecurity.
