UN warns synthetic drug production surges in Myanmar’s Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle, spanning parts of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand, has long been a hotspot for illicit drug production, but a new UNODC report reveals an unprecedented surge in synthetic drug manufacturing and trafficking specifically in Myanmar’s Shan State. Methamphetamine seizures totaled 236 tons across East and Southeast Asia in the past year, a 24% increase from 2023.

This rise exposes worsening law enforcement and security challenges in the region, affecting countries adjacent to Myanmar through increased drug availability and related criminal networks. While seizures demonstrate some enforcement success, the actual supply of methamphetamine is estimated to be much larger, fueling addiction, violence, and social instability.

The report underscores the need for intensified regional cooperation and targeted interventions to disrupt production hubs and trafficking routes tied to armed groups and criminal syndicates operating in Myanmar. The growing drug trade threatens public health systems, undermines governance, and destabilizes communities not only in Myanmar but across East and Southeast Asia.

Global stakeholders and regional governments are urged to bolster efforts in intelligence sharing, border security, and community resilience to confront the rapidly expanding synthetic drug epidemic originating from the Golden Triangle.
