EU rejects South Ossetia vote, condemns Moscow's role

The European Union has rejected the so-called presidential elections held in Georgia's occupied breakaway region of South Ossetia on 18 September 2026, saying it does not recognise the constitutional and legal frameworks, including recent amendments, used to organise the vote. The EU said the outcome is null and void. In the statement, the EU strongly condemned actions undertaken by Moscow to have a Russian official appointed as de facto president of the occupied breakaway region.
