Russian state banker fired after warning economy is lagging and war costs are rising
A senior Russian state banker has been dismissed after publicly warning that the country is falling behind major economies and would not win a prolonged economic war with Ukraine. Andrei Klepach, the chief economist at VEB, was fired days after Russian media reported on remarks he made in May to fellow economists. The dismissal comes amid continued scrutiny of how Russia's wartime economy is coping with sanctions, military spending and wider pressure on growth.Klepach had served as chief economist at the state-controlled development bank since 2014.
