Russia and China Veto UN Security Council Resolution on Strait of Hormuz Security

The UN Security Council did not adopt a resolution intended to enhance security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for global maritime trade and humanitarian aid. Eleven countries supported the resolution, but permanent members Russia and China used their veto power to block it, while Colombia and Pakistan abstained.

The proposed resolution encouraged states using the strait — located between Iran, Oman, and the UAE — to coordinate defensive measures, including escorting commercial vessels to ensure their safety. It also demanded that Iran immediately cease attacks on shipping in the area.

The failure to pass the resolution leaves the Strait of Hormuz largely closed to international trade and humanitarian transport. Given the strait’s strategic importance—carrying a significant share of the world’s oil exports—continued disruptions pose risks to global energy markets and regional stability.

The vetoes highlight deep geopolitical divisions within the Security Council and complicate international efforts to resolve tensions in the Middle East, where ongoing conflict continues to threaten essential maritime routes.
