Legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle dies aged 92

Asha Bhosle, the iconic Indian playback singer whose voice defined Bollywood music in the 1970s and 80s, has died in Mumbai at the age of 92.

She passed away at Breach Candy Hospital where she was admitted with extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.

Her family confirmed her death on Sunday, with her son Anand Bhosle stating that her last rites will be held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai the following day.

Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages over a career spanning seven decades.

She was a two-time Grammy nominee and received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sadness over her passing, highlighting her extraordinary musical journey and lasting cultural impact.

The singer's death has caused significant mourning across India, with tributes pouring in from prominent figures in the music and film industries.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu described her death as an irreparable loss to music lovers.

Bollywood actors and musicians, including AR Rahman and Shankar Mahadevan, also paid tribute to her enduring legacy.

Bhosle's passing is notable as she was one of the most versatile and celebrated voices in Indian cinema, often compared to her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar, who was revered as "India's nightingale" and died in 2022.

Despite early personal struggles, including a turbulent marriage at 16, Bhosle carved out a unique path embracing a wide range of musical genres from pop to folk.

Born on September 8, 1933, into a musical family, Bhosle began singing as a child alongside her sister after their father's death.
