Tottenham Captain Cristian Romero Out for Rest of Season with Knee Injury

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero will miss the remainder of the 2025-2026 season due to a knee injury sustained during a Premier League match against Sunderland.

The 27-year-old defender suffered a high-grade partial tear of his medial cruciate ligament, sidelining him for up to eight weeks.

Romero was injured in the 1-0 defeat at Sunderland's Stadium of Light, where he collided with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and had to leave the pitch visibly upset.

Medical tests confirmed the severity of the injury, ruling him out for Tottenham's final six games.

This injury is a significant blow to Tottenham as they fight to avoid relegation, currently sitting 18th in the Premier League, two points behind West Ham.

The absence of their captain complicates the challenge for newly-appointed head coach Roberto de Zerbi, who described Romero as a "good player with a big personality" and a "crucial player" for the team.

Romero's injury also casts doubt on his participation in Argentina's squad for the upcoming World Cup, adding further uncertainty to his immediate future.

Romero has made 155 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions and has been a key figure in their defensive lineup.

His leadership on and off the pitch has been vital during a difficult season for the club.
