Spanish Prime Minister's Wife Charged with Corruption After Two-Year Probe

Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has been formally charged with corruption following a two-year criminal investigation, according to a court ruling published on April 13, 2026.

Gómez faces charges including embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings, and misappropriation of public funds.

The charges relate to her role at Madrid's Complutense University, where she directed a master's degree course in business studies.

The investigation, initiated by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado in April 2024, found evidence suggesting Gómez exploited her position as the prime minister's wife to secure the university post despite lacking relevant qualifications.

She is also accused of using public resources to advance private interests.

Gómez denies all charges.

Prime Minister Sánchez has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated attempts by right-wing groups to destabilize his coalition government.

Opposition parties have called for Sánchez's resignation in light of the charges.

The complaint was brought by the anti-corruption group Manos Limpias, led by Miguel Bernad, who is linked to far-right circles.

The group has a history of filing lawsuits against politicians, most of which have been unsuccessful.

When the investigation began, Sánchez suspended his public duties for five days to reflect on the situation, citing a "strategy of harassment" aimed at weakening him politically and personally targeting his wife.

The case is part of a series of corruption investigations involving Sánchez's family and former allies.
