Man Charged with Attempted Murder for Attack on OpenAI CEO's Home

A 20-year-old Texas man, Daniel Moreno-Gama, has been charged with attempted murder and multiple federal felonies after attacking the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco.

Authorities confirmed Moreno-Gama threw a homemade bomb, described as a Molotov cocktail, at the gate of Altman's residence around 4:00 p.m. local time on April 10, 2026, before fleeing on foot.

Approximately an hour later, Moreno-Gama attempted to set fire to the OpenAI headquarters in San Francisco, reportedly trying to break the glass doors with a chair.

No injuries have been reported, but the incidents caused property damage at both locations.

Moreno-Gama faces two counts of attempted murder alongside federal charges including possession of an unregistered firearm and attempted damage and destruction of property using explosives.

Federal prosecutors allege that Moreno-Gama was found with incendiary devices, a jug of kerosene, and a lighter at the time of his arrest.

He also possessed documents advocating violence against AI executives and investors, including a list of AI leaders and writings on the risks AI poses to humanity, with sections titled "Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction." Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche condemned the violence, emphasizing that disagreements should not be expressed through violent acts and stating that the alleged actions, which damaged property and could have taken lives, will be aggressively prosecuted.

OpenAI issued a statement underscoring the importance of democratic debate and rejecting violence against individuals regardless of their affiliation with AI labs or sides of the debate.

The attack highlights growing tensions surrounding artificial intelligence development and governance amid increasing societal concerns.

What remains unclear is Moreno-Gama's precise motive beyond his documented opposition to AI and whether further threats or accomplices exist.

Legal proceedings are ongoing, with Moreno-Gama scheduled for arraignment on the charges.
