Ex-student opens fire at high school in Turkey, attacker dead, 16 injured

An ex-student opened fire with a shotgun at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Siverek, Turkey, injuring 16 people before killing himself on the morning of April 14, 2026.
The shooting occurred at around 09:30 local time.
The attacker, a teenager with no criminal record, fired indiscriminately with a pump-action shotgun inside the school grounds.
Those injured include 10 students, four teachers, a cafeteria worker, and a police officer.
The wounded were taken to hospital, with five later transferred to other facilities for further treatment.
The school was evacuated following the incident.
Local governor Hasan Şildak confirmed the attacker had no prior criminal record and said the school was considered safe by police before the shooting.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker entered the school yard and immediately began shooting, moving through at least two classrooms and targeting anyone in his path.
One witness described the gunman as a teenager who suddenly pulled out a long, stocky gun resembling a pump-action shotgun and started shooting left and right.
A student present during the shooting said the attacker did not speak but opened fire as soon as he entered the classrooms, prompting students to throw themselves to the ground or escape through windows.
The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about school safety in the region, despite prior assessments that the school was secure.
